EMC leads the way in it@cork Adopt-a-School Programme
"This programme is designed to foster and recognise the development of high quality, innovative partnerships between IT-intensive organisations and schools. Successful school-business partnerships enhance the quality of education, enrich the learning experience of students and help ensure that teachers are well-positioned to fully exploit the power of IT. Adopt-a-School is a key initiative of it@cork, European Tech Cluster that has been designed to address all of these areas". Said Michael Loftus, it@cork.

EMC has been leading the way in working with schools and students, and has introduced a number of groundbreaking initiatives not seen before in Irish classrooms. EMC, regularly hosts local schools, providing tours of the Cork plant while introducing students to various IT professionals who tell them what it is like to work in the industry. EMC has also been hugely active in supporting budding scientists, participating in Junior Achievement and in introducing kids to the area of robotics.

Last January EMC was a Silver Special Award Sponsor at BT Young Scientist in the RDS, Dublin. EMC exhibited for 4 days at the event, performing interative demos and teaching students about EMC and Cloud Computing. EMC will also be exhibiting at next year's event with runs from the 9th to the 13th of January, 2013.

Employees with various functions from different departments within EMC volunteer in a program called Junior Achievement. In this programme, a significant number of EMC employees visit primary and post primary schools to teach classes and engage with students with a view to encouraging children to stay in school longer while making learning fun.

This year EMC Irleand is hosting a VEX Robotics competition. Eight local schools have signed up to take part. The eight schools have all received robotics equipment and have each been assigned an EMC mentor. Each mentor will visit a specific school to provide support and guidance to students in the building, programming and testing of their robots. The robots will compete officially at the Discovery Science Exhibition November 2012.

Bob Savage, Vice President and General Manager, EMC Ireland Centre of Excellence, states that "EMC recognises the importance of developing IT skills in students at young age so as to better equip future generations with the skills and knowledge that will be required to continue to make Cork a leading global technology hub."
