Cork,15 November 2012: Ireland's leading technology organisations were recognised today by it@cork, European Tech Cluster. Now in it's 6th year, the Leaders Awards acknowledge innovation and excellence across a number of categories spanning different sectors.

This years's winners included YouGetitBack.com (High Growth), PFH (Sustained Excellence), Crest Solutions (Research & Innovation) and Alanya Animal Health Monitoring (High Potential Start Up). OVERVIEW

Leading a Scrum team is radically different to traditional project management. Rather than plan, instruct, and direct, the leader of a Scrum team (called a ScrumMaster) facilitates, coaches, and leads. In this ScrumMaster Certification Course, you will learn essentials of working as a ScrumMaster or Scrum team member. You will learn how to assume the responsibilities of a ScrumMaster and to guide the development team, a project, or an organisation into Agile practice by fostering the adoption of new attitudes, collaborative processes and working to remove institutional barriers.

While the Scrum Alliance provides a list of core concepts that must be covered in the class, each instructor creates his or her own material, allowing courses to differ based on the strengths, interests, and experiences of the instructor. Martine's interest, research and experience has focused on planning and estimation techniques and as such this ScrumMaster Certification course covers Agile Estimation and Planning techniques in particular depth.

Upon completion of this ScrumMaster course, you will know how to use Scrum to maximise value creation, improve customer and employee satisfaction as well as engineering practices and tools. Additionally, upon successful completion of the course, each participation is enrolled as a Certified ScrumMaster, which includes a one-year Scrum Alliance membership, where additional ScrumMaster-only material and information is available.

OBJECTIVES AND OUTCOMES

Upon completion of this ScrumMaster course, you will know how to use Scrum to maximise value creation, improve customer and employee satisfaction as well as engineering practices and tools. Additionally, upon successful completion of the course, each participant is enrolled as a Certified ScrumMaster, which includes a one-year Scrum Alliance membership, where additional ScrumMaster-only material and information is available.

-Assume the responsibilities of a ScrumMaster.
-Remove the barriers between development and the customer so that the Customer/Product Owner directly
 drives development.
-Improve employee and customer satisfaction.
-Improve accuracy of estimation and planning.
-Improve the engineering practices and tools so each increment of functionality is potentially shippable.

Exposures faced by IT firms - Are you protected?

O'Leary Insurance and Hiscox have recently become members of it@cork, European Tech Cluster and are the leading providers of Insurance Solutions to the technology industry in Ireland. They have kindly agreed to provide an insight to it@cork members on some of the exposures faced by technoogy firms in Ireland today.

You don't have to do anything wrong to be sued! Some examples below highlight that all IT firms have an exposure. Sometimes this is because of errors in their business and other times it can be due to percieved errors or simply competitors trying to put them out of business. As technology, media and telecoms insurance specialists, much of our time is spent keeping on top of these dynamic sectors. We listen and talk regularly with clients, lawyers and industry experts to get the insight we need to continually refine our products. You can feel supremely confident our cover is thorough, adaptable, realistic and ultimately more effective.

Large Experienced Firm - Multi Million Claim

  • IT firm contracted to supply and implement customised software. $7 million project value.
  • Client claimed there were fundamental flaws in the software.
  • In spite of working through fixes, a large number of critical flaws remained.
  • A letter of claim was then received claiming $9 million in damages.

Small Technology Business

  • Case where the firm probably would have become insolvent without the assistance of insurance.
  • A larger competitor made an offer to purchase - "you can become our best friend or worst enemy".
  • The offer was declined.
  • The competitor then issued legal proceedings alleging copyright infringement, trade mark infringement, passing off and breach of confidence. The motivation was to put this small firm out of business.

Data Breach

  • Privacy leaks have a habit of going from bad to worse in a short space of time. The adverse publicity this brings is a redictable feature of this.
  • Being aware of this risk and dealing with it quickly and effectively can make a huge difference to the
eventual outcome for the effected customers and the business that leaked the data.
  • This business is one that scans and indexes documents, including medical records.
  • A broadcaster contacted this business to advise it had obtained confidential medical records.
  • The business used their insurance policy to manage the PR and press coverage arising from the issue.
  • No claim was subsequently brought.

VOIP Supplier

  • VOIP system to consumer. Successfully installed and client was happy.
  • Customer received an unusually large bill from the telco (€50,000) instead of their usual €3,000). The majority of costs related to calls made to Nigeria, Cuba and Mexico by unauthorised third parties.
  • Investigation showed that a firewall port was left open in error and enabled third party hackers to defraud the customer.
  • The port was closed and the customer blamed the supplier. Our claims team was in the position to pay the outstanding fees and the insured was saved a bill of €50,000.

Adopt-a-School
it@cork Adopt a School Programme making a strategic impact

Cork College of Commerce (CCoC) has used the Adopt-a-School programme to make a strategic impact with one of its adopted schools, Colaiste Chriost Ri.

CCoC is the largest college of further education in Ireland and offers a huge array of courses and qualifications designed specifically to meet the requirements of industry, those seeking employment and students who wish to progress to higher education. CCoC caters for the needs of over 2,000 full-time day students every year.

Helen Ryan, Principal, and Jer Crowley, Deputy Principal, have been responding actively to Colaiste Chriost Ri's information technology needs. They have already organised the donation of 18 reconditioned computers in 2012 and are planning to provide programming classes for Colaiste Chriost Ri students in 2013, with a view to ensuring that this successful "match up" will continue to deliver a strategic impact for students at the school well into the future.

"Cork College of Commerce is fully committed to helping as many schools as possible through the it@cork Adopt-a-School programme as it wishes to ensure that students are provided with the opportunity to acquire the IT skills that will help them in the development of their future careers in the region and beyond, " said Jer Crowley.

Colaiste Chriost Ri is an all-boys school which was founded by the Presentation Brothers in 1960. It's student population stands at 640, the students coming from the local area as well as from futher afield. The school seeks to promote full participate in all aspects of school life, bringing about the balanced development of each person. Principal Sean Culhane said "we are delighted to be participating in the it@cork Adopt-a-School programme and the donation of the computers by CCoC greatly enhances our capacity to provide IT opportunities to our Students".

Michael Loftus, Chairman of the Education Subcommittee of it@cork, European Tech Cluster, said "it is heartening to see organisations such as Cork College of Commerce take an enlightened approach to the provision of support for schools as they seek to provide their students with opportunities to learn how to use IT in creative ways".

He continued "many benefits will accrue directly to the students which will, in turn, contribute to the economic and social development of the region, a core goal of it@cork, European Tech Cluster".

Ireland Takes Full Control Stateside with Leading Company
Incidentcontrolroom.com

Incidentcontrolroom.com is looking at a busy year in 2013 after going global in the last number of weeks following their launch in Pennsylvania, which was officially attended by An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny TD. In operation a little over 20 months, Incidentcontrolroom.com has exceeded all ambitions of CEO David McCarthy and his cofounder Shane Mooney. With new partnerships being sought and established on a regular basis since it's inception in January 2011, a pairing with a new partner and distributer Zenith Technologies has brought Incidentcontrolroom.com Stateside.
The launch took place as part of the Taoiseach's visit to the US in October and was attended by a large number of clients, staff and US public representatives including Congresswoman Allyson Schwartz and State Representatives Kate Harper and Brendan Boyle at Zenith Technologies new headquarters in Bluebell, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.

Incidentcontrolroom.com is a cloud and mobile-based software application, designed to aid large organisations in the correct initial response, escalation and communication of incidents in the event of an emergency. The technology provides customers in the Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Industries with customizable mobile applications, and access to this emergency management information from anywhere in the world ensuring business critical decisions are made. By using the Incidentcontrolroom.com thery are ensuring that these emergencies are managed more effectively thus cutting the cost of incidents.

At the launch, David McCarthy stated, "For customers in the pharmaceutical, manufacturing and medical device sectors, incident costs are significant, and poor management of incidents are even costlier. Human costs, production downtime, damage to market reputation and litigation costs all affect the bottom line. I am excited to be here today with our global strategic partner, Zenith Technologies and delighted Taoiseach Enda Kenny has taken the time to help launch the product. The opportunities over here are incredible, and I'm really looking forward to working with our American customers in the coming months.

This leading technology has been developed following first-hand experience of poor management of emergency events across a number of different industries. Incidentcontrolroom.com is aiming to become a global leader in the area of emergency and crisis management and with this most recent breakthrough Stateside, market leadership seems inevitable.

it@cork Join the Panel at "BOYD"

TechFire logo

ComputerScope's TechFire series of tech briefings saw back to back events in Dublin and Cork.

This was thanks to partners BT and Cisco, and was not only the first time that back to back events were held, but also the first time that the series had visited Cork.

With the series now well bedded-in in terms of format, it was still very interesting to see the different emphasis from the audience in terms of key areas of interest.

The topic was the 'bring your own device' (BOYD) phenomenon, with a specific focus on risk. Experts from BT and Cisco, as well as implementers CWSI, gave outlines on best practice and related experiences from various users and customers.

The balance of the events is very much in favour of interactivity, with the presentations being kept brief. As attendees register for the event, they are given an opportunity to ask a question which is then put to the panel on the day.  More than 30 questions were received and there were common themes running throughout. Security, compliance, cost, business case and other themes were clear from the questions, but as always happens when people gather in a room to hear information, there were shifts in emphasis both days.

In Dublin, the questions on the morning were around a data protection theme, where both the security and ownership of the data were discussed. Of particular interest seemed to be the issues around dual-use devices that are owned by the user. Questions were asked about what happens if innappropriate material on such a device was backed-up to a company system, is there a liability. Of course, innappropriate material need not mean criminal or even obscene, but could relate to privately held views expressed via social media.

There was also interest in the Dublin event in the case of the need or a remote wipe, and what the implications would be if personal data was lost. The case was cited of a US worker whose laptop was wiped, along with his unpublished novel.

In Cork while these themes were addressed, there was significant interest in the issue of licensing. A question was asked with regard to the need for multiple licenses for mobile devices when accessing the likes of a browser-delivered CRM System. The panel reported that in such cases, a licence per device is indeed required, though it was also mentioned that several vendors often provide bundle of such licences for free initially. The overall opinion offered by the expert panel was to check with vendor of each application before use.

This issue was futher explored as a means of control, as enterprise applications are often accessed from mobile devices through dedicated clients. It was pointed out that such access gives a greater degree of control over data as it is often segregated from other data by the cliend app and is therefore more easily identified in the case of an end of life device, or remote wipe.

In both events, the panel discussion, being a mix of the pre-submitted questions and audience interaction, went fill time indicating the level of interest and the need for information on the topic.

The detail and specifics of the questions belied the struggle that many organisations are facing in terms of demand for BOYD and the need to implement any such programme safely and appropriately.

What is clear is that that the Irish ICT sector is not far behind the rest of the world on this trend and will not be denied the benefits. However, the major message from the pannelists for the events was that even BOYD is not appropriate for your organisation, then you must have a BOYD policy that states just that. But if you are to embark on any type of BYOD or even subsidised or supplied mobile device programme, the process begins with a clear, well-defined and well thought out policy.

The Smarter Senses Project
The Smarter Senses Project

The Smarter Senses Project is a multi stranded initiative from it@cork to deliver assistive technology to children with autism.
The Smarter Senses Project is a multi stranded initiative from it@cork to deliver assistive technology to children with autism. The project has been developed in cooperation with the Shine Centre for Autism in Cork and has to date delivered touch screen technologies, kidsmart computers and a Sensory Garden for the eighty children who use the centre on a weekly basis.

According to Denis Collins Chairman of it@cork "The I.T Industry should be a primary leader in this space where our skills can so positively affect the lives of children and adults with autism. The Smarter Senses Project is a great example of it@cork, industry leaders and technology making a difference where it is greatly needed".

Phase one of the project has been supported by it@cork members Laya Healthcare, BNY Mellon and IBM. We are now ready to embark on the even more ambitious second phase of the project to propel the Shine Centre to a global benchmark in developing learning applications and technologies to assist in the teaching of children with autism. This second phase will open up opportunities for members of it@cork, in partnership with the Shine Centre to develop innovative and dynamic applications in this area.  The Smarter Senses Project is not all about funding, it is about participation and how the smallest contributions of finance or human effort can snowball into something momentous. There is always a spare seat at the table.

Thank you,
